Metal Furniture Aluminum furniture rarely rusts, but it can become discolored, dirty and pockmarked. To revive it, clean it with detergent-filled steel wood pads followed by a wet cloth rubdown. After it's dry, wax it with the same kind of paste you use on your car. It should be stored indoors over the winter. Wash wrought-iron furniture in the early spring and late fall with soap and water and apply a coat of wrought-iron wax. Before waxing, touch up any place where the enamel has worn or chipped off. If there's a rusty spot, remove it with steel wool before repainting. If it needs complete repainting and the old coat is in reasonably good condition, first rub it all over with steel wool to provide a biting surface for the new paint. If the old coat is in bad condition, first remove all you can with steel wool, then apply an acid solution that will strip off all remaining paint (ask your True Value store what type to buy and how to apply it). Finally, paint it with at least two coats of enamel. Wrought-iron furniture can be left outdoors over snowy winters; but to minimize damage, you may want to keep it indoors.
